Cette idée me fascine ici.

‘With this album, I wanted to explore the obscurity and radiance of the human soul’

SALOME JORDANIA 19 With ‘Passage’, her debut solo album, pianist Salome Jordana takes the listener on a spiritual and heady journey through the works of Liszt, Scriabin and Saariaho. Between mysticism, darkness and a quest for transcendence, she reflects on the genesis of a programme of rare intensity, conceived as a true inner odyssey. Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor, Scriabin’s ‘Satanic Poem’… for this debut solo album, why did you choose such sombre repertoire? I don’t know whether I would describe it as sombre. To start with, I had imagined a much more joyful programme, but I found myself drawn to these works… Once La Dolce Volta had agreed to the project, I felt free to fully embrace this somewhat bold idea .I was deeply moved by the label's willingness to take such a risk. The B minor Piano Sonata is one of the major works in the piano repertoire. These various pieces speak of solitude, faith, spirituality and mysticism: there is a balance between light and darkness. In life, two emotions govern us: love and fear. This programme explores those two extremes.”

20 PASSAGE: A SPIRITUAL ODYSSEY The title of your album, ‘Passage’, suggests a transition. Is this debut album a rite of passage for you? I wanted to tell the story of a person’s journey through trials and tribulations, and moments of deep self-questioning, sometimes in their most extreme form, until they attain a state of profound understanding. This might bring to mind an inner struggle, a combat, but also something more spiritual. The word Passage can be understood on different levels, and that is what gives the programme its unity. I like words that open onto several meanings. Passage can be understood on three levels. Firstly, as a rite of passage, since this is my first album. Then, passage as transition, as an inner transcendence, which is why I added the subtitle A Spiritual Odyssey. It is about crossing a threshold, undertaking a voyage. Finally, ‘passage’ also refers to the extremely difficult technical passages, which in itself represents a challenge. From a recording perspective, nothing came easily.

Musically speaking, what was the most significant challenge with this album ? All these works demand an uninterrupted intensity. They unfurl in a single breath. There is no time-out. Even in the studio, you have to remain completely committed. Liszt's B minor Piano Sonata represents the greatest challenge: it is a work lasting nearly thirty minutes without a break, and it is the foundation upon which I structured the entire programme. I have been working on this piece for several years. It encompasses every character and emotion, while the other works on the album explore different facets of it: benediction, struggle, solitude, love… Then one shifts towards the opposite extreme with Scriabin's Piano Sonata n° 9 op.68 (Black Mass), where all positivity disappears. Each work is there for a precise reason, and everything converges towards the Liszt Sonata. After it, there is no room for anything else. SALOME JORDANIA 21

22 PASSAGE: A SPIRITUAL ODYSSEY Do you feel transformed after this ‘spiritual journey’? Yes, in a sense. One of my greatest inspirations was Mahler's Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen,( ‘I am lost to the world’). At some point in our lives, we all experience that feeling of solitude and loss. I could not include it on the album since it is not a work for piano, but its spirit nourished the entire project. This album is a journey from a sense of loss towards the revelation of hope. Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude, inspired by a poem by Alphonse de Lamartine, raises many questions about divine strength, rebirth, and the possibility of beginning anew. For me, the coda of this work is the most comforting moment on the album: something pure and uplifting, as though offering a sign that we are not alone. There is also a reference in the title to 2001: A Space Odyssey. I have always been fascinated by the idea of the microcosm and the macrocosm: this film explores the outer universe, space itself, whereas I wanted to explore our inner universe. But to answer your question, I do feel transformed, if only because I now know what it costs to record music of such density.

SALOME JORDANIA 23 Is it so different from the concert? Yes, I hadn’t realised just how different recording is from live performance or from daily practice. In the studio, you have to give100% continually. At one point, I felt physically ‘on fire’. In the middle of the album, you have included a very mysterious piece by Kaija Saariaho; ‘Prelude for Solo Piano’. It feels as though we’re straying onto unknown paths, with no discernible way out. Why did you choose this piece? I have a deep affection for this work. It is undoubtedly the most cosmic piece on the album. The colours it seeks to create seem to come from another world. As in Liszt’s B minor Sonata, nothing ever truly reaches a conclusion. There is no full stop: everything remains in suspension open onto the unknown, onto a void. This work carries within it an abyssal quality, and I needed that sense of emptiness before entering the world of Liszt’s Sonata.

24 PASSAGE: A SPIRITUAL ODYSSEY Scriabin’s Ninth Sonata, known as the ‘Black Mass’, is hallucinatory. How do you approach this work, which lies somewhere between spirituality and obscurity? It is a very sombre, diabolical work, marked by extreme psychological instability and profound sarcasm. It is seductive, but with a dangerous kind of seduction. Alexander Scriabin writes in the score : ‘with an increasingly caressing and toxic sweetness’. That sweetness can kill. There is an almost demonic irony in it. Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No. 9 is dark and fragmented, filled with tritones and chromaticism. That is what I mean when I speak of psychological instability: the music seems constantly to disintegrate. Johann Sebastian Bach declared that descending chromatic lines lead to hell, while ascending chromatic lines lead to paradise. I find that idea fascinating here. What kind of sound were you looking for in this recording? We explored extremes. In the recording, you can explore the limits of silence and most delicate colours, things impossible to achieve in quite the same way in concert. I didn’t think I could have achieved those nuances until I discovered close- miking.

25 Why did you choose a French record label for this debut album? I have always felt a particular warmth from French audiences. I have a strong connection with France, where part of my career has taken shape. The piano technicians and sound engineers there are remarkable. And it is very rare for a label to place its trust in a young artist with such an ambitious programme. I have been very fortunate. I hope listeners will agree to undertake this journey with me. It is not an easy path, but it can be profoundly rewarding. When you explore the deepest and most painful parts of your being, you learn to know yourself better, to feel greater empathy, and to draw closer to a form of truth. So you are looking to transform your audience? Yes, absolutely. Every listener will interpret this album differently, and I find that deeply inspiring. I have drawn inspiration from a wide variety of sources.I have spoken to you about Stanley Kubrick, Alphonse de Lamartine and Gustav Mahler. There is also a an architectural space that fascinates me; Il Memoriale Brion (the Brion Tomb) in Italy, which inspired the album cover. Everything is captured on this album. And I think my next album will quite definitely be more joyful! SALOME JORDANIA

26 PASSAGE: A SPIRITUAL ODYSSEY Did your family background shape your musical journey? Completely I was named Salome after the eponymous character of Richard Strauss' opera. I grew up in that world: my grandfather was a conductor, my father as well, while my grandmother and aunt are pianists. I was raised surrounded by opera, ballet and concerts. But paradoxically, no one ever forced me to become a musician. On the contrary, my family knew how difficult this profession could be and always told me to choose it only if I truly wished to. I think that is what preserved my love of music. Your overall education has been very international… Yes: Juilliard School, then Yale University, and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. This training was both intense and comprehensive. I was taught not only how to become a performer, but also how to be a citizen, how to develop goals, how to understand other artistic forms… And in Georgia, I had an extraordinary opportunity: performing on stage with an orchestra from the age of seven, several times a year. That taught me very early on how to communicate with an audience. My teacher Natalia used to tell me: ‘You never truly learn a piece until you have performed it on stage several times’, because it comes alive in performance… Today, I understand that remark perfectly.

SALOME JORDANIA 27 You’re going to take part in The Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in 2026. Why do you continue participating in competitions? I love competitions. Everything I have been fortunate enough to achieve in my career has come, in one way or another, thanks to competitions. Not necessarily because of the prizes themselves, but because they allow you to extend your limits, broaden your repertoire, and above all meet people who can play a decisive role in your journey. For example, my career in France began thanks to The Valencia International Piano Competition Prize Iturbi, Catherine d’Argoubet, who was a member of the jury, launched my career in France by inviting me to her festival, Piano aux Jacobins and suggested my name to La Dolce Volta. Without that, none of what is happening to me today would have come about. You never know what may result from a competition. And yes, perhaps I do enjoy pushing myself to an extreme level, but that is precisely what is driving me forward.
