Sometimes a moment of grace comes along. That
happened with the
Davidsbündlertänze
. I played the
work twice. The first time was after the Paris attacks
of November 2015. I remember that concert as a very
sombre one. The audience was small, the atmosphere
was heavy. It was hard to play a score as fantastical,
bouncy, lightweight as this one in that context. I found
myself struggling. That’s why I decided to programme
the work again six months later. The second time, the
opposite happened. The notes glided under my fingers,
the score unfolded by itself, without effort on my part,
and I allowed myself to be swept along with the utmost
naturalness. That was one of the most wonderful
moments in this recording project.
