What distinguishes Mozart from Clementi?
The genius of Mozart lies partly in the fact that each note, each
harmony isplaced inaverynatural order and inperfect equilibrium.
With Clementi, on the contrary, there’s a very voluble and brilliant
dimension. His writing bubbles out on all sides; it has a dramatic
aspect, and at the same time tremendous charm. But he does
have a slight tendency to ramble on . . . That’s why I don’t do all
the repeats in the Sonata op.50. After his developments, Clementi
can sometimes lose his way through saying the same thing over
again. As he was a great virtuoso, some passages are very difficult
to play. I recorded this work on the modern piano to bring out its
full flamboyancy.
