MICHEL BOUVARD & FRANÇOIS ESPINASSE

Independently of this compositional device, there

are sometimes other elements that connect someof

these cantatas. For example, the aria from Cantata

BWV 68 mentioned earlier is closely modelled on

no.13, ‘Weil die wollenreichenHerden’, of the ‘Hunt’

Cantata BWV 208. In the latter work, however,

it was the aria for the deity of flocks and herds

Pales, ‘Schafe können sicher weiden’ (familiar in

English as ‘Sheep may safely graze’), that André

Isoir decided to arrange, again expanding the

basic material. The realisation of a continuo part

and sometimes the invention of a countermelody

to the solo part add substance on the organ to this

pastoral movement, which originally combined

two recorders with the vocal line and the basso

continuo.
