What does this recording mean to you?
This disc marks a break, a renewal. All my previous records were released on EMI.
Today I’ve changed labels, repertory, sound engineer . . . These developments allow
me to escape a certain routine, to put myself on the line. Recording Chopin is a
challenge, and I am aware of the risks involved. There are countless benchmark
versions in this repertory. But I don’t seek to measure myself against them, and my
approach to the composer is honest and completely sincere. Today I am still in full
possession of my technical resources and I knowwhere I’m going. I have identified
a style that is mine alone.
Also, I record on my own Steinway, which allows me to express myself in the best
possible conditions. That instrument has beenmy constant companion for twenty
years now, and I know how to deal with every facet of it.
