17 XAVIER PHILLIPS ∙ LAUSANNE SOLOISTS How did you come to make this recording? I organised a concert tour, which cost me many sleepless nights; the role was new to me! I felt responsible for the ensemble and felt I had to lead from the front. I managed to secure four consecutive dates in a single summer, took the Soloists with me, we rehearsed, and the human adventure began! The aspiration to make a recording came about after that tour. The idea appealed to the President of the Foundation, and we set the project in motion after a second winter tour. We recorded the first part, the Four Seasons (Estaciones porteñas), and very soon the slightly crazy idea of adding the bandoneon concerto (Aconcagua, concerto for bandoneon and orchestra) came to me. It is a work that represents Piazzolla’s world in a particularly vivid way, and is emblematic for bandoneonists. I have always adored this instrument, I would have loved to have learnt it, and I have often imagined myself playing this concerto.
