De Profundis
of the cello. Mozart lets
out a cry of despair, reminiscent of his Symphony N
o
. 40. The Minuet seems to
have been inspired by a good-humoured Austrian
ländler
, and it becomes more
and more violent and rebellious in its developments. The Allegro is stunning:
breathtaking volubility, brilliant superimposition of themes, admirable balance
between the four instruments; key changes, amazing virtuosity, with dazzling
leaps, trills, changes of tempo... This is invention in the richest sense of the term:
a swirling of music, holding out a hand to the final movement of Bartók’s fourth
StringQuartet!
