23 MICHEL PORTAL ∙ MICHEL DALBERTO Does this assessment of Schumann’s output imply a special approach on the performer’s part? Michel Dalberto: Pianists learn Schumann’s music at a very early age. We then play it throughout our lives, but as with all really important works, I’ve noticed that if you let a few years go by between each of your performances, you realise that your interpretation of them has changed profoundly. It’s the same feeling you get when reading a great book. What memories do you have of the recording sessions? Michel Dalberto and Michel Portal: The recording was made in the middle of the pandemic, in a cultural world that had virtually ground to a halt. For both of us, it came as a breath of fresh air, a welcome continuity. We loved meeting up again for several days at the Arsenal in Metz and benefiting from optimal technical and artistic conditions.
