The space provided for the organ is horizontal, which required an unconventional layout. The pipes are placed on two levels. The basses stand on the lower levels with their longest pipes rising up to the second level on which the trebles are placed. The largest Pédale pipes are accommodated horizontally. The organ is entirely enclosed behind ‘general’ swell shutters, which can be used for dramatic crescendos. In accordance with the wishes of the architect Jean Nouvel, the organ façade is minimalistic. When the general swell is closed, only a group of 16’ pipes, situated around the mechanical console, discloses the presence of an organ. The Philharmonie de Paris is a superb venue, visually and acoustically, which is complemented by the Rieger organ: a magical, contemporary instrument that draws on a proud history. OLIVIER LATRY 47
