In your album, in addition to the pivotal Sonata no.4, with its incandescent second movement, you play an assortment of pieces that are clearly rooted in a form of Romanticism, such as the expressive Prelude and Nocturne for the left hand, and the Étude op.8 no.12, arguably Scriabin’s most famous piano work and a favourite with Horowitz. When Horowitz and I met, I didn’t play it for him; it was more or less his personal preserve. I included it here as a sort of nod to him. This fearsome, high-flying piece keeps landing on the black notes: when you have big fingers, as I do, it’s especially uncomfortable to play. 23 JEAN-PHILIPPE COLLARD ∙ BILKENT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, EMIL TABAKOV
