Although your recordings of Rachmaninoff are well known, your discography hasn’t featured anything by Scriabin until now. What is the fundamental difference between these two composers? Jean-Philippe Collard — Rachmaninoff conceives his pieces in terms of the piano. They follow a pianistic ‘Highway Code’ disdained by his slightly older contemporary, who thinks of music in the round, as a spectrum of colours – especially in the full- textured works of his last creative period. How did you discover Scriabin? My curiosity was sparked off by some études played by Horowitz, which then led me to explore mainly the earliest phase of his output. 19 JEAN-PHILIPPE COLLARD ∙ BILKENT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, EMIL TABAKOV
