VANESSA WAGNER & WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 25 Wilhem, how does this project fit into your career path? Wilhem Latchoumia — I was a prizewinner at the Orléans Competition, which specialises in contemporary music. So I’m on familiar ground! My whole repertory revolves around curiosity about rare music that’s waiting to be discovered. The idea of constantly exploring new pieces appeals to me; it’s my nature, and it’s an urge I share with Vanessa. My work also weaves a common thread through folklore and the origins of music, anything akin to what you might call ‘popular’ inspirations. When I made my Villa-Lobos recording, I knew that he had been inspired by Brazilian folklore, where there is this idea of transversality: you go from one style to another, and musicians are free to borrow from someone else anything that touches them, without any shame attached to the idea. Each of my recordings has some kind of connection with popular music, and we find that link here with Bernstein. So that’s already one reason why I found this a compelling project.
