For Gilles, the world is a village. One day I was on Usedom Island in Germany and I received a phone call from Gilles, who I thought was at his home in California: ‘Guess where I’m calling from? I’m in your kitchen. I was going through Montmartre, I saw the light was on, so I rang the doorbell.’ The world is almost too small for Gilles, a musician of genius whom Yehudi Menuhin called the violinist of the twenty-first century. I’ve never heard anyone play, improvise in such different styles with such ease. Under his fingers, classical music and traditional musics are one and the same: our ancestral language.
