QUATUOR HERMÈS 17 While ‘Death and the Maiden’ is striking for its quasi-symphonic dimension, ‘Rosamunde’ is distinguished by its fundamentally cantabile and intimate character. The Andante, which uses the theme of the Entr’acte in B flat from Schubert’s incidental music for the play Rosamunde , is something of an idyll. But it is also full of doubts and interrogations. The dark side of this music appears on the repetitions of the theme, which introduce new colours and sentiments, to the point where it comes to sound like a drone, thus creating something akin to a funeral procession.
