QUATUOR HERMÈS 13 Which musicians have influenced your vision of Schubert? First of all Alfred Brendel, with whom we have worked on many occasions. We’re fascinated by his approach to Schubert, expressive yet displaying exceptional clarity. He succeeds in sustaining whole phrases, even entire movements, without ever losing the rhythmic thread of the discourse. But that doesn’t mean that his playing is in any sense foursquare: the rubato, always natural, is combined in exemplary fashion with a sense of architecture, colour and harmony.
