24 SHOSTAKOVICH • WEINBERG How would you describe your interpretative approach? Joseph — Weinberg’s music is very complex. Nothing is self-evident, there’s a guiding thread to find, colours to look for. It’s easy to imagine three characters simultaneously living out one very powerful narrative, during which they sometimes have to struggle with each other, absolutely without concessions, without yielding anything to the others. Victor — For example, the Aria of the first movement features a violin melody, mezzo forte and very cantabile. On the piano, I sketch out footsteps in the snow, pianissimo and extremely legato. Even if the respective timbres and dynamics of the violin and the piano have nothing in common, I need only modify my playing almost imperceptibly to conjure up a completely different soundscape. Hence the importance of carefully choosing the colours from which we compose our timbral palette.
