Joseph — We’ve never asked ourselves any questions about the future of the trio because playing together has always seemed self-evident to us. There’s a kind of mental connection between us that often proves useful in concert situations: we manage to follow each other’s initiatives very naturally, without planning anything in advance. Performing with our brother and sister, without fear of being judged, very quickly helped us to play ‘without filters’. We are incapable of disguising ourselves or doing anything other than what our musical personalities dictate. On the contrary, we’re sometimes almost too ‘direct’. Victor — We keep up a constant process of exchange, which nourishes the chamber dialogue between us, because we must have the humility to follow the ideas of the others. But we’re so used to sharing our thoughts that, even if the other person can’t always put them into words, we generally manage to understand each other. There’s no such thing as routine. We’re competing with each other the whole time! Although each of us has other projects and musical partners, I know in my heart that I could never let go and take risks to the same extent with anyone else. We’re incredibly lucky to be able to go to extremes like that without fear of being judged by the others. The fact that we are siblings defuses the situation and takes the sting out of potential conflicts over and over again. It’s extremely rare to have so much shared history with one’s musical partners: in our case, it allows us to nurture our interpretations with many elements from our past. TRIO METRAL 17
