Granados probably wanted to invite his performers to surpass themselves by presenting them with not only a devilishly difficult score but also a profusion of galant markings. 1 But behind this curtain of deference there are the virtues of elegance and nobility so characteristic of Spanish music. 1. The score is peppered with expression marks in a mixture of French, Italian and Spanish: ‘Con garbo y donaire’ (With grace and elegance), ‘Molto capriccioso’ (Extremely capricious), ‘Nonchalamment’ (Nonchalantly) etc. (Translator’s note.)
