XAVIER PHILLIPS & ANNE GASTINEL 21 How do you feel at the moment, when you’ve just left the recording studio? Anne Gastinel: There’s always something magical about a recording; it’s that now-or-never moment when you can try things out, take risks – sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t work at all. Tempi, dynamics, timbres: whatever the repertory you’re tackling, the few very intense days you devote to a recording are always an opportunity for discoveries that wouldn’t have occurred otherwise. This Offenbach session was no exception to the rule! Xavier Phillips: And we mustn’t forget the role of Jean-Pierre Loisil, our artistic director. It’s true that we arrived with an overall conception of the works; but it’s been exciting and always enriching to dialogue with him. Anne Gastinel: He leaves us a great deal of freedom; he intervenes at the right time, only when necessary, with a brief remark that’s snappy and effective. The worst thing you can have is a producer who intervenes too much. The recording is in the can now, and we look forward to giving these duos in concert!
