The circulation of the theme on the different levels of tessitura ( Jesu meine Freude BWV 713), its intermediary position for the alto in a three-part structure ( Christ lag BWV 695), or the tremendous perpetuum mobile which affects our concentration on the drawn-out cantus firmus in the bass ( Valet will ich dir geben BWV 736): all these elements confer on theseworks a status that is relatively free from functional concern. The De Profundis for six voices, Aus tiefer Not schrei’ ich zu dir , paradoxically and indirectly brings us back to the latter, through the ingenious and most attractive interpretation that is presented here (no known historical reference). This is the only piece on this recording which belongs to one of the large referenced chorale cycles ( Clavier Übung III ) and it is naturally one of the most sophisticated creations in the figural genre. 34 BACH_TE DEUM / DE PROFUNDIS
