67 VASSILENA SERAFIMOVA ∙ QUATUOR ARDEO If the term Ardeo — Latin for I burn — is the name of this quartet, it is also the motto with which the four musicians approach their repertoire. Formed in 2001 at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, the Quatuor Ardeo has established itself as one of the most distinguished French ensembles. Crowned with numerous prizes at prestigious international competitions, it has been nourished by the teaching of great musical figures such as Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Ferenc Rados, and Eberhard Feltz, and collaborates regularly with leading composers including Thomas Larcher, Pascal Dusapin, François Meïmoun, and Philippe Schoeller — not to mention Kaija Saariaho. The Quartet shares the stage with artists such as pianists Kit Armstrong and Adam Laloum, cellist Thomas Demenga, clarinettists Pascal Moraguès and Reto Bieri, and also with percussionist Vassilena Serafimova. The Ardeo Quartet has an extensive and highly acclaimed discography, with several world premieres. In residence at La Fondation Singer-Polignac from 2008 to 2016, the Quatuor Ardeo also took part for more than ten years in the professional training programmes and outreach initiatives of the ProQuartet association.
