61 VASSILENA SERAFIMOVA ∙ QUATUOR ARDEO The percussionist Vassilena Serafimova never ceases to astound… Having received her musical education in Bulgaria from her father, it was refined at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, and perfected at the Juilliard School in New York. She moves effortlessly from international competition to electro installation, from a solo marimba recital at Carnegie Hall to an immersive set in Xavier Veilhan’s Studio Venezia. Nothing resists her: neither Bach, nor Xenakis, not even minimal techno. A prizewinner at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, the World International Marimba Competition in Stuttgart, and the TROMP International Percussion Competition, she turns prizes into stepping stones and concert stages into sound laboratories. Soloist, improviser, chamber musician, composer and pedagogue, Vassilena moves freely among genres, formats, and continents. She creates new works (Connesson, Yotsov, Enhco, Kobayashi…), performs in quintet, duo, with orchestra, or in solo recital. She collaborates with jazz musicians, Bulgarian choirs, string quartets, and sound designers. Artistic director of festivals in both Bulgaria and France, professor at the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne, and creator of her own line of mallets with Vibrawell Mallets, she champions a living, liberated percussion: percussion for today’s world. She plays Adams as well as Vibrawell. But above all, she's her own musician.
