27 VASSILENA SERAFIMOVA ∙ QUATUOR ARDEO This narrative, one might even say “cinematic”, vision recalls the black-and-white soundtrack of the film Lady Be Good surprises in Fascinating Rhythm (1924), thanks to the insertion of eleven-beat irregular Bulgarian rhythms. Anecdotally, one of the first recorded versions highlighted the Hawaiian guitar, whose distinctive timbre already invited the listener into another sound world. In the present recording of Chinese Blues, we rediscover the atmosphere, rhythm, and effervescence of the 1916 piano roll recording made by George Gershwin himself. Also composed in 1924, the song The Man I Love met with such success that it was inserted, then removed, from several musicals, including Strike Up the Band and Lady Be Good. To date, almost a thousand recorded arrangements of the song are known.
