39 NATALIE DESSAY ∙ PHILIPPE CASSARD The green hummingbird, king of the hills, Seeing the dew and the bright sunlight Gleaming in his nest woven from fine grass, Like a cool ray of light flutters into the air. He hurries off and flies to nearby springs Where the bamboos sound like the sea, Where the red hibiscus with its divine scents Unfolds, revealing the moist glint at its heart. He descends and settles on the golden flower, And drinks so much love from its pink cup That he dies, not knowing if he has been able to drain it! On your pure lips, O my beloved, My soul too would have wished to die thus From that first kiss which perfumed it.
