11 NATALIE DESSAY ∙ PHILIPPE CASSARD When I was in Vienna last year, I heard you sing Mélisande at the Theater an der Wien, alongside Stéphane Degout and your husband Laurent Naouri, and I was deeply moved. I am well aware of my audacity in addressing you, but equally aware of the fact that a recording of these mélodies ought to be made no later than the end of 2011, or perhaps very early in 2012. Might there be a glimmer of hope that reading through the songs will make you fall in love with them and consider learning them? I sincerely believe that this music is worth the effort. The mere idea of ‘creating’ works by our beloved Debussy which have never been performed in public would seem to me to be a source of great musical emotion and pride at having contributed to the ‘Debussy monument’. What do you think? Thank you for taking the time to read me, and for your reply. I would like to express my admiration for your work, and tell you how touched I am by your art. Yours sincerely Philippe Cassard
