10 OISEAUX DE PASSAGE Paris, 24 August 2010 Dear Natalie, Forgive me for using this direct means of contacting you, but the subject I’d like to talk to you about calls for, let’s say, a certain urgency. Here it is: Just recently, Madame Francine Perrot, whose grandfather was a close friend of Claude and Emma Debussy, gave me a dozen manuscripts by Debussy: songs from his early years. Among them are four previously unpublished works, unknown to the musicologists. They are very interesting, full of charm and humour, and one of them, quite long, Les Elfes, is even, I think, a great success. (...) It’s as simple as this: there are not dozens of sopranos who can give bring out to the full the flavour, virtuosity and distinctive colour of these unpublished mélodies. There is only you, and I say that wholeheartedly.
