This four-movement symphonic-scale work, which is still very much a Romantic work, was subsequently dubbed ‘États d'âme’ byTatiana Schloezer-Scriabina (1883-1922), Scriabin's second wife. For a long time, I was seduced by this idea, but I came to realise that the narrative nature of the titles she had devised for its movements made listening to them very difficult. I've tried to put it into words: What state of mind? For which movement? … But I have come to detach myself from this preoccupation while continuing to live this sonata musically, emotionally, as an inner journey, immaterial, certainly composed of different states of mind but without having to make them explicit. I became aware that ultimately the respective perceptions - the states of mind - of the performer and the listener are not necessarily the same, and I have accepted the elusive fluidity of this music.
