23 BEATRICE BERRUT The second, The Bipolar Mermaid, is a nod to Ravel’s Ondine, although I actually had in mind the siren Lorelei, seated on her rock overlooking the Rhine. The harmonies are directly inspired by Wagner and Liszt, but sometimes tip over into dissonance. The subject here is the emotional intensity of woman, who can alternate between reverie and rage. Finally, the third piece, She didn’t wait for his kiss to wake up, evokes the evolution of a soul, whose lament is what we hear at the start. The same theme then appears, differently harmonised, in a strange atmosphere representing inner questioning, before evolving into a song of victory that depicts fulfilment. I refer here to the process of individuation as described by the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, whose writings have been a great inspiration to me.
