18 ABRACADABRA To immerse yourself in the fantastical world of fairytales is an invitation to deploy specific, sometimes flamboyant, sonorities. Could you tell us how you work with tone colours? I devised this programme several years ago and left it to mature, dreaming of an instrument that would give me a wide range of registers. The Bösendorfer grand seemed to me to be the obvious choice, since it perfectly fulfilled my wishes by offering a rich palette of timbres ideally suited to developing an orchestral sound on the piano. When I was practising the pieces, I kept its magnificent sonorities constantly in mind. The possibilities were endless, because as a pianist, you spend your whole life trying to imitate the orchestra!
