15 BEATRICE BERRUT You have chosen to celebrate the world of fairytales in this album. Did they play an important role in the development of your personality? Beatrice Berrut: When I was growing up, fairytales were very much a part of my daily life and my sister’s, if only at bedtime when we were lulled to sleep by the stories our mother told us. Walt Disney cartoons also stimulated our imaginations. We dreamt of enchanted forests and flocks of sparrows that could sing and speak. All the same, this world, full of charm and tenderness, portrayed a very traditional vision of male/female relationships, assigning clearly defined roles to each sex that I don’t think are very compatible with today’s society. I came to the conclusion that a little girl would deserve a different kind of heroine to help her blossom. So I distanced myself from these stories and turned to the fascinating and unusual world of Tim Burton.
