35 TRIO SŌRA A joy that vanishes in the Adagio mesto . . . Pauline: The Adagio has great profundity. The passion and ardour are gone. There’s no turning back. The loss is there, irrevocable. But the tone is not pathetic. It’s that of a resigned soul. Fanny: All the tensions have disappeared. Only infinite sadness remains, and the composer surrenders to it. He no longer fights it. He accepts it. Angèle: In their own way, these four trios mark milestones on the long path of Johannes Brahms’s life. They reflect what was going on inside him: the impetuosity of his youth, the surge of love, then trials, wisdom, resignation and nostalgia. That’s another reason why we wanted to record these trios complete: we had to walk all the way along this path with him, in its fullness.
