30 BRAHMS ∙ THE PIANO TRIOS Does the Finale: Allegro giocoso bring the joy, the light that are absent from the other movements? Pauline: We tried in vain to find some profound meaning for it, in keeping with the logic of the previous movements. In fact, we simply had to allow it to flow, to move forward nimbly, to find the joy that Brahms asks for in the title. It’s a liberating movement, a breath of fresh air, like a folk festival where people dance and drink beer! Fanny: It’s almost impossible to play this movement without a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye. The augmented fourth in the theme contains such a cheekiness, humour and folkloric sentiment.
