23 CÉDRIC PESCIA Is vocality as important here as dance? One must first remember that Bach wrote more for the voice than for any other instrument, as his numerous Kantaten (cantatas) and Messen (Masses) attest. And we know, from the few testimonies that have come down to us, he asked his pupils to play the keyboard in the most cantabile manner possible. I too seek to emphasise this vocal quality when I perform his music on the piano. The instrument on which I recorded, which is perhaps a little less brilliant than modern Steinways, greatly helped me in this respect, for it makes it possible to sustain the sound and obtain a resonance of a kind that is difficult to find today. If I sometimes adopt a more overtly pianistic style of playing in certain dances, it is nevertheless the singing character of the music that I have desired bringing to the fore.
