18 BACH | THE FRENCH SUITES (BWV 812-817) After the Goldberg-Variationen (Goldberg Variations), Die Kunst der Fuge (The Art of Fugue), and the complete Das wohltemperierte Klavier (The Well-Tempered Clavier), you have chosen to record the six French Suites. Where does this attraction to large-scale cycles come from? My recordings, as with my concerts, reflect my preference for programmes built around a single composer. I love this idea of a voyage, of immersing oneself in another world or in one great work. Admittedly, this cycle was not conceived to be performed in its entirety, but it is in this way that I experience my most exhilarating moments on stage with my audience.
