27 VANESSA WAGNER The last track is a little gem of gentleness and nostalgia. How did Glinka’s littleknown Nocturne come to be the final point of your story? I came across it late in the day, just as I was trying to finish my story. Its title, La Séparation, brings us back to the film I mentioned earlier, which was one of the sources of inspiration for my programme. It depicts the loneliness that can result from the quest for an unattainable, fantasy love, which reminds us of Tchaikovsky’s personal life and is a favourite theme of Romanticism. Glinka’s piece seemed to me to be the end of the story I had imagined for myself. It was a gentle, sensuous conclusion to a journey tinged with tenderness, sadness and hope, like the cycle of the seasons.
