26 EVERLASTING SEASONS Unlike Grieg and Tchaikovsky, Sibelius wrote very little for the piano. Why have you included his Impromptus, which are so rarely heard? I’m an immense admirer of his great orchestral works, and his Violin Concerto is probably one of the pieces of music I’ve listened to most in my life. There’s an incredible strength in his music, a very dark side as well as a somewhat morbid tenderness that moves me and echoes a similar vein in Tchaikovsky and Grieg. Being curious by nature and keen to explore lesser-known repertoire, I also wanted to spotlight a few rarities. Sibelius’s piano writing may seem clumsy, but some of his Impromptus, especially no.5, are absolutely sublime and fit in perfectly with the slightly eerie colouring I wanted to give to the end of my story.
