21 VANESSA WAGNER And you rediscovered that same intimacy in Grieg? The impulse for this programme was born three years ago, in the solitude of lockdown. I began to build it around a selection of Grieg’s wonderful Lyric Pieces, with the idea of creating a dialogue between them and miniatures by other composers. After initially looking in the direction of Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann, whom I’d played a lot, I hit on Tchaikovsky’s cycle The Seasons as the obvious choice. It was a film by Nicole Garcia, Mal de pierres (From the Land of the Moon), that brought this music to my attention. In a particularly touching scene, Louis Garrel plays the famous ‘Barcarolle’ (June), which I knew, of course, but which didn’t figure in my repertoire. It struck a chord with me and the next day I ordered the score. I found in it the tone of intimate revelation that frees up my narrative instincts.
