29 TRIO METRAL How do you conceive the transition between the movements, from the solemnity of the Passacaille to the vivacity of the Pantoum, which plays the role of a scherzo? Victor Metral: In concert, the definition and perception of the duration of the pauses between the movements are very important. That applies equally to Ravel and Chausson. In Chausson’s Trio, one can even envisage running some movements into the next without a break. It’s true, too, that the concert offers a special theatrical dimension, which is linked to various parameters such as the acoustics of the hall. There are also cases where we decide on certain things during the rehearsal, and then in the heat of the concert we choose different options.
