27 TRIO METRAL Classicism and modernity are juxtaposed in Ravel’s Trio. Does it call for any specific preparation? Laure-Hélène Michel: Everything about the Trio is incredibly difficult! The instrumental realisation and the technique required are so complex. A certain amount of time and in-depth practice are essential to assimilate the fingerings, the rhythms and a multitude of details that can’t be overlooked. The precision of each musician’s individual preparation is a prerequisite before you even start thinking about the interpretation. Victor Metral: Once we’d come together as a trio, we began with a complete run-through of the score and tried to understand the swing of the rhythm, the very special inner movement of this music. The advice we received from Michel Dalberto, a pupil of Vlado Perlemuter who in turn had studied with Ravel, was extremely valuable in helping us go deeper into the piece.
