18 VILLA-LOBOS ∙ DO BRASIL What was your aim in revisiting your early career, when you tackled some of the great composers of South America, and Villa-Lobos in particular? Wilhem Latchoumia: I felt the urge to rejoin my old travelling companion, thanks, among other things, to the scores that Roger Accart, the founder of the Lyon group Musique du Temps, entrusted to me when I was a student. So you’ve been playing the piano music of Villa-Lobos for a long time now? Yes. I like to play the Ciclo brasileiro . What has always fascinated me about Villa- Lobos is his attachment to the musical heritage of his country. And I particularly like the highly personal, imaginative way he throws the spotlight on traditional music in his piano works, which combine folklore and modernity in a perspective reminiscent of Bartók. This is what gives Suite infantil , Cirandas and Caixinha de música quebrada their charm.
