Recording this musical summa remains, for most performers, a veritable ‘Grail’. What kind of a challenge does it represent to do so at the age of twenty-six? To be honest, it was discovering these suites at the age of four – in a video, played by Yo-Yo Ma – that made me want to learn the cello. At first my parents thought it was just a passing fancy. So this music has been familiar to me for . . . twenty years! Every time my family moved to another country, my successive teachers accompanied me once again in the study of Bach’s works. His music has given me such sustenance that I couldn’t have thought of any other repertory for my first recording. I am aware that this performance is only indicative of my current understanding of the work. I suppose I may well be dissatisfied with it in a few years’ time. But I reassure myself by reflecting that you can never say you’re done with Bach. 17 MICHIAKI UENO
