Precisely howwould you define the evolution of your interpretation of these sonatas you have been playing for so many years? Gary Hoffman: I can’t describe that evolution, though obviously it does exist. We don’t talk much in rehearsals. You can’t work to achieve a rapport, it’s part of life. Rehearsal consists of connecting everything that life expresses and that takes shape in the music. David Selig: Creating a shared vision means both a physical awareness of and total availability for your musical partner. As we mature, questions of tempi and of going still more deeply into the music arise naturally. In fact, we feel freer to let certain aspects of our interpretation shift. All the same, having that ‘freedom’ in no way means being less rigorous. We have no theory or position on the subject. It’s only time that does its work.
