22 RAVEL ∙ THE SOLO PIANO WORKS From start to finish of his creative life, Ravel composed songs. Does the voice in some sense irrigate his piano works? Ravel’s piano and orchestral music have a high profile and often obscure the sizeable corpus of songs he wrote throughout his life, ending with the triptych Don Quichotte à Dulcinée , his very last work. I have a tremendous love for the voice. From a very early age, my approach to the piano sought to surpass its harmonic dimension: I always tend towards singing as the ideal, taking into account the vocal dimension of the writing, and that dimension is definitely very present, though to varying degrees, in Ravel’s piano music. I think he’s a very lyrical composer.
