14 MOZART AT THE OPERA What did you get out of listening or relistening to these works? It's impossible to overemphasise the preponderant role of the woodwind and horns in the operas I’ve mentioned above: all the works in which they appear give Mozart a further opportunity to deepen his skill in giving them individuality, literally playing with them, identifying them with his future characters. Think of the dialogue between the horns and Fiordiligi, the flutes and oboes that enlace the arias of Susanna and the Countess and the ensembles in the first act of Don Giovanni , the clarinets that suffuse the vocal ensembles of the operatic finales with their melancholy, the flute that guides Tamino, the ritornellos for wind band in Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte . In this respect, the Concerto K482, which takes up some of the ideas of its predecessor the ‘Jeunehomme’, especially in the finale, strives to educate the listener’s memory: in the operas, we will find the same turns of phrase, the same motifs, the same rhythmic and melodic cells, adjusted to fit the characters, the action and the situations.
