21 TALICH QUARTET The moving Lento in D minor that follows is a long, solitary cantilena, introduced over a syncopated accompaniment: a true ‘pearl’, captivating the listener with its depth of feeling and the charm of its harmonic purity. It shows the composer dreaming of solitude in a silent American forest, while at the same time betraying a certain longing for his native land. Here again, the cello takes over the theme in its high register and, following the development, it has the last word. In a deeply nostalgic overall atmosphere, first violin and cello play the role of storytellers, sometimes joined by the second violin. It is a movement steeped in simplicity, by means of which Dvořák achieves the most intensely personal expression.
