31 The programme also includes two of Joseph Canteloube’s ‘Songs of the Auvergne’. Adrien — Canteloube followed the same approach as Bartók in Hungary or Dvořák in what is now the Czech Republic. He travelled from village to village in the Auvergne to attend festivals and weddings, and recorded what people played and sang. Then he transcribed those themes and harmonised them. There is great beauty in the directness of these tunes, which go straight to the heart. We think these two songs are real highlights of our programme. But you can also feel the influence of traditional or popular music in Poulenc’s Les Chemins de l’amour and Massenet’s Nuit d’Espagne . The same is true of Astor Piazzolla, who is inseparable from the Argentinian musical tradition. Our album ‘Chanson bohème’ refers to nostalgia. Its content is familiar, for who wouldn’t recognise Piazzolla, Hubert Giraud’s Sous le ciel de Paris or Tchaikovsky’s Valse sentimentale ? Yet even the Albumblätter by the violist and composer Hans Sitt, true gems that are unfortunately quite unknown, will awaken buried sensations in our listeners. ADRIEN LA MARCA & DANAE DÖRKEN
