Adrien, you come from Aix-en-Provence. What kind of music did you grow up with? Adrien — As a little boy I was cradled by happy little nursery rhymes. I grew up in a family of musicians and so I was always in contact with music – classical, but also jazz, rock and chanson. As I got older, I was also able to discover the more traditional music of the region, like the tambourinaires who play the galoubet (a little pipe with three holes) and the tabor. They can often be seen at traditional folk festivals and they’re very popular in Provence. Folklore runs through your entire album, and traditional music has inspired many classical composers. Do you sense that when you play those pieces? Adrien — Yes, very clearly. Brahms and Dvořák, in particular, travelled a great deal to collect folk tunes. All music has its roots in so-called folk music. It was an exciting process of discovery for us to try to balance its presence in our album. 30 CHANSON BOHÈME
