29 What is striking in the content of your album is that you transcend the different genres. Indeed, that is its guiding thread. Should we see this as a nod to your respective cultures? Danae — My mother is Greek and my father is German. I’ve always regarded it as a great privilege to grow up with the imprint of two cultures. I am fluent in two mother tongues and have benefited from two perspectives on life: one that’s pretty northern European on the German side, and the other Mediterranean, very lively, on the Greek side. When I’ve had to deal with a problem, I’ve always seen at least two possible solutions instead of one. I feel especially Greek when I go out, for example to a restaurant, where my Greek side gains the upper hand. By contrast, I always turn up punctually for appointments, and in that respect I’m very German. To arrive hours late, as Greeks sometimes do, is definitely not my style. Then again, I love spontaneity. At home, we would often just start singing – Greek songs. My father would always sing Édith Piaf’s Je ne regrette rien to me at night.
