Not everyone sees it that way . . . Adrien — I’m aware of that. When you play classical music, people expect you always to perform that repertory. It goes without saying that it’s absolutely magnificent, and I’ll continue to play it all my life. But if you always stick to your customary comfort zone, you can end up pigeonholing yourself and missing out on something. The audience at classical concerts hasn’t necessarily had an advanced musical education. When my childhood friends who aren’t musicians attend my concerts, they give me their honest opinion. It’s important to know how my music-making is perceived, and most of the time their reaction to the works is purely emotional. And that’s what it’s all about: communicating and disseminating emotions. Danae — When I listen to music, it isn’t classical. But that’s something that actually enriches my playing. Whether it’s rock, or jazz, or samba, I can derive benefit from it. I don’t think that differences in style are essential, as long as the music is of good quality.
