27 ANDRÉ ISOIR Nicolas Lebègue , organist of Saint-Merry in Paris, and of the Royal Chapel in Versailles, though still complying respectfully with the Cérémonial des évêques in his second book, nevertheless appears as the figure through whose agency the secular world tightened its grip on the organ loft. Among his innovations are the Trio for two trebles and bass, on the manual or the pedal, the Dialogue between treble and bass in a single récit, and the récit de tierce en taille , while his final book offers a selection of Élévations , Offertoires , Noëls , Symphonies , and character pieces which clearly aim, over and above a certain conformity to the constraints imposed by the Church, at the same appeal and the same rhetorical power as Lullian tragédie lyrique .
